BILLY Shoes for AFOs (ankle-foot orthosis)

An Anthony Wayne Primary Student is in need of a shoe that will fit over their AFO (ankle-foot orthosis).  An AFO is a custom-made medical device that stabilizes and supports the ankle and foot. Their insurance covers the AFO but  will not cover appropriate footwear to fit over them and support the braces.  BILLY Footwear incorporates zippers that go along the side of the shoes and around the toe, allowing the upper of each shoe to open and fold over completely. Thus the wearer can place his or her foot onto the shoe footbed unobstructed. Then with a tug on the zipper-pull the shoe closes and secures overtop the user's foot, so that the student can put their own shoes off and on. The cost of the shoes is $100.
